PUNCTUATIONS

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT PUNCTUATION MARKS ?

When speaking, we can pause or change the tone of our voices to indicate or emphasize emotions such as joy, anger, surprise or even a pause. When writing, we must use punctuation to indicate these places of emphasis.

Let's have a look at some of the most commonly used punctuation marks :

  • The full stop / period
  • The comma
  • The exclamation mark
  • The question mark
  • The apostrophe
  • The colon
  • The semicolon
  • The hyphen
  • The quotation marks
  • The brackets

Why is the period important ?

When a period is not used at the end of sentences, it creates confusion in the minds of the readers, as it becomes impossible to judge the end of the sentence and beginning of a new one.

Remember to always use it at the end of a statement.
A sentence that tells something is a statement.

Examples:
  • I want to buy a new car.
  • Global warming is an alarming phenomena that threatens life on earth.
  • My husband is a workaholic.
Use the period at the end of a command.
A command is a sentence that orders someone to do something.

Examples:
  • Please leave the room.
  • Give me that book.
  • Be here at 10 o'clock tomorrow.
Always use a period and not a question mark at the end of indirect questions.
An indirect question is a question that is said as a statement.

Examples:
  • Mom asked me if I could buy some grocery for her.
  • I asked the boy if he was getting late.
  • I asked the boy where he got the tattoo done from.
Use periods in abbreviations.
An abbreviation is a short form of words.

Example:
  • Dr. is the abbreviated form for doctor.
  • Col. is the short form for colonel.
  • U.S.A is the abbreviation for the United States of America.
Periods are used in website addresses.

Examples:
  • www.insightintoeng.blogspot.in is my blog address.
